What Sales Teams Get Wrong About Social Selling

“Social selling” has been a buzzword long enough that most sales leaders have an opinion on it — and a lot of those opinions are built on a narrow or outdated version of what it actually involves.

Misconception one: it means direct pitching in comments or DMs

The version of social selling that gives the concept a bad reputation is reps sliding into comments or DMs with a pitch. That’s not social selling — it’s cold outreach wearing a different outfit, and prospects recognise it instantly. Genuine social selling is about consistent, credible visibility that makes a rep worth talking to before any pitch happens.

Misconception two: it’s a top-of-funnel-only play

Visibility matters throughout a deal, not just before it starts. A prospect mid-evaluation who sees a rep consistently sharing relevant, credible content is more likely to take that rep’s call seriously than one who’s silent until it’s time to close.

Misconception three: it can’t be measured

This is the assumption that keeps social selling under-resourced. Reach, engagement, and — with the right tracking — downstream pipeline association are all measurable, the same way paid channels are. The absence of a dashboard historically has been a tooling gap, not a genuine measurement limit.

What a realistic social selling motion looks like

Reps sharing relevant content consistently (not daily, necessarily — consistently), commenting thoughtfully on prospects’ and industry content, and letting genuine visibility do the credibility-building work that a cold pitch can’t. It’s slower than a single well-timed DM, and considerably more durable.
